Foundations

The Fourth House is the landscape of home, roots, belonging, and emotional foundations. It explores where we come from, what nourishes our sense of safety, and the foundations upon which the rest of our lives are built.

Every journey requires a place to return to.

A place of rest.

A place of belonging.

A place where we can remove the masks required by the outside world and simply be.

The Fourth House is that landscape.

Traditionally associated with home, family, ancestry, and origins, the Fourth House sits at the very bottom of the chart wheel. It represents the roots that anchor us beneath the visible surface of life.

If the Tenth House reflects what we build in the world, the Fourth House reflects what supports us from beneath it.

It is the foundation beneath the foundation.

The soil from which everything else grows.

Many people first encounter the Fourth House through their relationship with family.

The environment they were born into.

The stories they inherited.

The traditions, patterns, and values passed from one generation to the next.

Yet the Fourth House extends beyond family alone.

It also speaks to our emotional foundations.

The places, people, and experiences that help us feel safe.

The environments that allow us to soften.

The spaces where we feel most fully ourselves.

For some, home is a physical place.

For others, it may be a person, a community, a creative practice, or a deep sense of connection to the natural world.

The Fourth House asks us to explore what belonging means on a deeply personal level.

Where do I feel rooted?

What nourishes my inner life?

What helps me return to myself when the world becomes overwhelming?

Because this house governs our foundations, it often reveals patterns that operate beneath conscious awareness.

Some of these patterns support us.

Others may be inherited stories that no longer serve us.

Throughout life, we are continually invited to examine both.

The Fourth House teaches that belonging is not merely something we inherit.

It is also something we cultivate.

We create home through the choices we make, the relationships we nurture, and the environments we build around ourselves.

At its heart, this landscape reminds us that growth requires roots.

The higher a tree reaches toward the sky, the deeper its roots must extend into the earth.

The same is true for us.

Before we can fully express ourselves in the world, we must understand what sustains us beneath the surface.

The Fourth House invites us into that understanding.

It is the place where we remember where we come from and discover what truly allows us to feel at home.

Everyday Expression

The Fourth House appears in the moments we seek comfort, create sanctuary, spend time with family, revisit old memories, care for our living spaces, or long for a deeper sense of belonging.

It is present whenever we return to what nourishes us emotionally.

Why It Matters

Understanding the Fourth House helps us recognize the foundations that support our wellbeing.

It reveals the roots beneath our choices, the patterns we carry forward, and the environments that help us feel safe enough to grow.

Without strong roots, growth becomes difficult to sustain.

Common Misunderstandings

A common misconception is that the Fourth House only refers to childhood or family.

While these themes are important, the house also reflects our evolving relationship with home, belonging, emotional security, and inner foundations throughout life.

Another misunderstanding is that home must be a physical place.

For many people, home is experienced as a feeling, a relationship, a community, or a way of being.

Carry This Forward

The Fourth House reminds us that before we reach outward, we must be rooted.

Home is not only where we come from.

It is what helps us return to ourselves.

Reflections

What helps me feel truly at home within my own life?

Think about the places, people, and experiences that create a sense of belonging for you.

What qualities do they share?

What do they reveal about what your heart considers home?

Bring It Into Your Life

Notice how your body feels when you imagine a place of safety and belonging.

Do your shoulders soften?

Does your breath deepen?

Does your nervous system settle?

The body often knows where home is before the mind can explain it.

Create a list of five things that help you feel grounded, safe, and connected to yourself.

Choose one and intentionally make space for it this week.

Rather than treating it as a luxury, approach it as an essential part of tending your roots.
