All Seasons

A simple New Moon ritual using a candle, paper, and a few quiet moments to reflect on what has passed and choose an intention for the lunar cycle ahead.

Begin where you are. Tend what is quietly becoming.

The New Moon marks the quiet beginning of a new lunar cycle. Because the Moon is not visible in the night sky, this phase is often associated with what is beginning beneath the surface: an idea, a hope, a change in direction, or a desire that has not yet taken full shape.

This ritual is a way to pause, notice what is emerging, and give it your attention. You do not need special tools, an elaborate altar, or perfect timing. A candle, paper, and pen are enough. Anything else is simply there to help you feel present.

Purpose

To create a quiet pause at the beginning of the lunar cycle and choose one intention or quality you would like to nurture in the weeks ahead.

When To Return To This Ritual

Return to this ritual on the New Moon or within a day or two of it. You may also use it whenever you are beginning a new season, project, relationship, habit, or chapter of life.

Gather

  • A candle

  • A journal or sheet of paper

  • A pen

  • A safe dish if you plan to burn paper

  • A warm drink, if you would like one

  • Fifteen to twenty quiet minutes

Everything beyond the paper and pen is optional. Use what you already have.

Natural Companions

If this resonates with you...

  • Moonstone: A traditional companion for lunar cycles, intuition, and new beginnings. Hold it while reflecting or place it beside your candle as a reminder that growth often begins before it can be seen.

  • Clear Quartz: A simple choice when you want something tangible to represent clarity or focused intention.

  • Tulsi: A warm cup of Tulsi tea can help create a grounded, steady beginning to the ritual.

  • Rose: Rose may suit intentions connected to tenderness, love, creativity, or emotional healing.

  • Rosemary: Rosemary may support intentions involving focus, courage, clarity, or moving forward.

Choose one if it resonates with you. An ordinary stone, a favorite mug, a leaf, or a glass of water can serve the same purpose.

Prepare Your Space

Begin simply. Clear a small area, place your candle in front of you, and set your paper and pen nearby.

If you have a permanent altar, you may use it as it is or add one small object connected to your intention. If you do not have an altar, a table, windowsill, bedside surface, or quiet corner is more than enough.

Dim the lights, open a window, or make tea if those gestures help you settle. The goal is not to create a perfect setting, only to mark the moment as different from the rest of the day.

Before You Begin

Light the candle and take a few slow breaths. Notice the support beneath your body and allow yourself to arrive without needing to feel calm, focused, or certain.

Look at the flame for a moment and let it become a simple point of attention.

Step One

Think back over the lunar cycle that has just ended.

Ask yourself:

  • What felt meaningful?

  • What changed?

  • What am I grateful for?

  • What am I ready to leave behind?

Write a few words or sentences. There is no need to explain everything.

If you want to release something, write it on a separate piece of paper. You may tear it up, place it beneath a bowl of water, or burn it safely in a fireproof dish.

Step Two

Turn your attention toward what is beginning.

Ask yourself:

  • What is asking for my care?

  • What feels ready to grow?

  • What quality would support me now?

  • What have I been quietly wanting to begin?

Choose one intention if possible. Three is plenty.

Your intention might be rest, courage, patience, honesty, creativity, trust, clarity, or a willingness to begin again.

Step Three

Write your intention as a simple sentence.

You might begin with:

  • During this lunar cycle, I will make room for…

  • I would like to nurture…

  • I am learning to…

  • I am ready to explore…

  • I will return to…

Let the wording feel supportive rather than demanding. Your intention is something to live beside, not something you must perform perfectly.

Step Four

Read your intention aloud if that feels comfortable.

Hold your chosen crystal, herb, cup, or another object if you have one. You may also place one hand over your heart and the other on your abdomen.

Notice how the words feel in your body. If the intention feels harsh, pressured, or impossible, soften it until it feels like a direction rather than a demand.

Step Five

Fold your written intention and place it somewhere you will naturally encounter it during the coming weeks.

You might keep it in your journal, beneath your candle, beside your bed, on your altar, under a stone, or in a small pouch.

Take one final breath, blow out the candle, and let the ritual end quietly.

A Gentle Invitation

You may choose to tuck your intention into your journal and simply let it accompany you through the month. Some intentions need little more than your awareness.

If your intention feels like something you truly want to cultivate, consider returning to it as the Moon changes. During the Waxing Moon, ask how you can support its growth. At the Full Moon, notice what has become clearer. During the Waning Moon, release what isn't serving your intention, and during the Dark Moon, allow yourself to rest before beginning the cycle again.

You don't need to force progress or think about your intention every day. Simply let the rhythm of the Moon offer gentle moments to pause, notice, and begin again.

Reflection

The New Moon reminds us that beginnings are often invisible. Before anything changes outwardly, something may already be shifting within us.

You do not need to see the whole path. You only need to notice what is asking to begin and choose how you would like to meet it.

Journal Prompt

What feels ready to grow in my life right now, and what kind of care will it need from me?

Closing Blessing

May this new cycle meet you gently. May your intention guide you without becoming a demand, and may you trust what is quietly beginning before it can be seen.
