The Waning Moon invites us to simplify. This gentle ritual offers space to release habits, expectations, or commitments that no longer support the intention planted earlier in the lunar cycle.
Release with intention. Make space with compassion.
After the brightness of the Full Moon, the light begins to soften.
The Waning Moon reminds us that growth is not only about adding more. It is also about making room. Trees let go of their leaves. Gardens are pruned so they can flourish. Our own lives ask for the same quiet tending.
Releasing is not about rejecting parts of yourself. It is about creating space for what matters most.
Purpose
To gently release what no longer supports your intention, making space for what you wish to continue nurturing.
When To Return To This Ritual
Return during the Waning Moon, especially after completing a Full Moon reflection or whenever you feel the need to simplify.
Gather
A candle
Your journal
A pen
A small bowl or fire-safe dish (optional)
Fifteen to twenty quiet minutes
Natural Companions
If this resonates with you...
Natural Companions
Smoky Quartz: A grounding companion when letting go feels difficult.
Black Tourmaline: A reminder that healthy boundaries create space for growth.
Lavender: A calming ally for moments of transition and release.
Rosemary: A supportive companion for clarity and moving forward with intention.
Cedar: A traditional symbol of cleansing and renewal.
Choose only what feels supportive. The ritual is complete with or without these companions.
Prepare Your Space
Light a candle and settle into a quiet space.
If you have a permanent altar, you may choose to place your journal there. Otherwise, a table, desk, or windowsill is more than enough. Let simplicity be part of the practice.
Before You Begin

Take several slow breaths.
Think back to the intention you planted at the New Moon and reflected upon during the Full Moon.
Without judgment, notice what has supported it—and what has not.
Step One
Write down anything that feels heavy, distracting, or no longer aligned with the direction you want to move.
These might be habits, expectations, unnecessary commitments, fears, or ways of speaking to yourself.
Simply notice them.
Step Two
Choose one item from your list.
Ask yourself:
Does this still serve me?
Am I carrying this out of habit?
What might become possible if I let this go?
There is no need to solve everything at once.
Step Three
Write one simple sentence beginning with:
I am ready to release...
Allow yourself to finish the sentence honestly.
Step Four
If it feels meaningful, fold the page, tear it into small pieces, or safely burn it in a fire-safe dish.
If you prefer, simply close your journal.
The action is symbolic. The intention behind it matters more than the gesture itself.
Step Five
Choose one small thing you will stop carrying into the next lunar cycle.
It does not have to be dramatic.
Sometimes release looks like saying no to one unnecessary commitment, taking one afternoon to rest, or letting go of the expectation that everything must happen immediately.
The Dark Moon will soon invite you into rest and quiet. Allow this week to become a gentle transition rather than a sudden ending.
Blow out your candle and let the ritual come to a peaceful close.
Reflection
Letting go is rarely about loss alone.
Often, it is an act of trust.
Every space we create becomes an invitation for something more aligned to grow.
Journal Prompt
What feels lighter when I imagine no longer carrying it?
Closing Blessing

May you release with kindness rather than force. May what no longer belongs leave gently, and may the space it creates welcome what truly supports your life.
