Season

All Seasons

A simple practice for separating what matters from the particular way you expected it to happen, so a changed plan doesn't automatically become an abandoned one.

I can change the plan without abandoning what matters.

Sometimes we know the plan has changed before we are ready to let go of the way we imagined it. There can be disappointment in that, especially when the thing itself still matters to us. This practice is not about finding the bright side of a changed circumstance or convincing yourself that the new plan is better. It is simply a way of separating what mattered from the particular shape you expected it to take, so you can see what—if anything—you still want to carry forward.

Purpose

To preserve the intention beneath a plan while allowing its timing, size, or form to change.

When To Return To This Ritual

When something you intended to do has become too much, when your capacity or circumstances change unexpectedly, or when adjusting a plan feels so much like failure that you are tempted to abandon it altogether.

Gather

A piece of paper or journal, and something to write with. Bring the plan that isn't working too—not physically, necessarily, but honestly.

Natural Companions

If this resonates with you...

Nettle — for replenishment and the reminder that sustainable growth depends upon what is available to feed it.

Prepare Your Space

There is nothing particular to prepare. Sit somewhere that asks as little of your body as possible. This practice can happen at a desk, on the floor, in bed, or anywhere else you happen to be.

Before You Begin

Think about the thing you intended to do before circumstances changed. Notice the disappointment before moving immediately toward a solution. The original plan mattered to you. You don't need to pretend otherwise in order to change it.

Step One

Write:

The plan was...

Describe what you expected to happen. Keep it concrete. This isn't the moment to make the plan more reasonable in retrospect. Write down what you actually wanted.

Step Two

Underneath it, write:

What mattered about it was...

This is the part beneath the logistics. Perhaps you wanted to learn something, create something, connect with someone, care for yourself, begin a new chapter, experience pleasure, or move toward work that matters to you.

There may be several answers. Keep going until you reach the part you don't want to lose.

Step Three

Now write:

What is true today is...

Name the actual conditions you are working with now: time, energy, money, health, responsibilities, information, support. Try to describe them without turning them into evidence about your character.

They are conditions, not verdicts.

Step Four

Place the three statements beside one another:

The plan was.

What mattered was.

What is true now is.

Then ask:

What is one way I could still honour what mattered within what is true now?

The answer may be much smaller than the original plan. It may also be not yet. Both are answers.

Step Five

Choose only what belongs to today.

If there is a small action available, name it. If what you need is recovery, information, help, or more time, name that instead.

Leave the rest of the plan where it is. You do not have to redesign your entire future because today changed.

Reflection

Adaptation can feel especially painful when we have already adapted many times. Changing the plan does not require us to be grateful for the circumstances that changed it.

Sometimes agency is not getting to choose what happened. It is finding the small piece that remains ours to choose afterward.

Journal Prompt

If I could change the shape of this plan without abandoning what mattered about it, what might become possible?

Closing Blessing

May what matters survive the changing of the plan. May there be enough room for another way.
